  • Catalogue Essay

Matthew Barney conceived of his sequel to the first Cremaster Cycle as a gothic Western that introduces conflict into the system of equilibrium so imaginatively portrayed in the first cycle. On the biological level Cremaster 2 corresponds to the phase of fetal development during which sexual division begins. In Barney's abstraction of this process, the system resists separation and attempts to maintain a level ground.
Cremaster 2 embodies this regressive impulse through its looping narrative, moving from 1977, the year of Gary Gilmore's execution, and back in time to 1893, when Harry Houdini, who may have been Gilmore's grandfather, performed at the World's Columbian Exposition. The present lot, Cremaster 2: The Metamorphosis, highlights Norman Mailer’s cameo appearance in the film.
